I'm so glad we had this time together...

By Judy Myers

With my retirement in December, the partnership between Bruce Vento Elementary School in St. Paul and Extension Children, Youth & Family Consortium (BV/CYFC) is coming to an end. During these past four years, Bruce Vento teachers, staff, and administration have created a trauma-sensitive learning environment where students thrive and learn.

What we've done and what's next

The BV/CYFC partnership started with a schoolyard garden and calming room to support student learning and build self-regulation skills. The partnership also facilitated mental health services for students and families through Family Innovations, designed a new teacher lounge with designs by College of Design students and furniture donated by Room and Board, and, through a grant written by College of Design Professor Abi Asojo, Ph.D., got new round tables for the dining hall.

Next steps include creating a large nature playground. Discussions have already begun with students, parents, school administration and teachers.

Sharing our work with a story map

Because the work at Bruce Vento has sparked so much interest in other schools, a team of educators and evaluators from the Extension Center for Family Development and CYFC has developed a story map. This map highlights critical concepts, research that supports the BV/CYFC partnership initiatives, and resources that might be helpful for others to use. Instrumental in the design and development of the story map has been our consultant and marketing specialist, Kristen Heimerl. As I reflect on the past four years working with Scott Masini, school principal, Amanda Musachio, assistant principal, as well as numerous community and University partners, I realize I have learned a lot. This partnership has provided me a great deal of personal satisfaction and counts as one of the most rewarding things I’ve been part of over a fifty-year career. I leave knowing that everyone at the school has helped to create a sustainable model for meeting the academic, social, and physical needs of students and parents in the Bruce Vento school community.

Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies, Healthy Learners is an ongoing partnership between Extension Children, Youth & Family Consortium and Bruce Vento Elementary School. Together, along with many other partners, we are developing engaging learning environments that promote student learning and wellness.
